Verdict Depends on the cheese it came from

What it is

Whey is the watery part of milk that separates out during cheese-making. Dried into whey powder or concentrated into whey protein, it's a cheap, protein-rich ingredient added to many processed foods and supplements.

Why it matters for halal

Whey itself is just milk — the catch is that it's produced during cheese-making, so it inherits the rennet question. If the cheese was made with animal rennet from a non-halal source, that carries through to the whey.

The ruling

Whey from cheese made with microbial, vegetable or halal animal rennet is halal. Whey where the rennet source is unknown is treated as doubtful by the same logic as rennet and gelatin. Milk on its own is always halal — it's only the cheese-making step that introduces the question.

What to do when you're shopping

Whey with a halal mark, or from a brand that states it uses microbial/vegetable rennet, is the safe choice. Unlabelled 'whey' or 'whey powder' in an imported snack is best treated as mushbooh until you can check.
